Police Explorers

Willmar Police Department Explorer Post #3200

The Willmar Police Department is proud to offer to the community the Willmar Police Explorers Program. The Explorer Program is comprised of youth 15 to 20 years of age who have an interest in learning about law enforcement and what police officers do every day.

Applicants must fill out an application and pass an interview and background check. Upon being accepted, the Explorer post meets on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of each month from 6:00 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Law Enforcement Center in Willmar. Some of the topics that Explorers learn about include:

  • Crime Scene Search
  • Overview of the Criminal Justice System
  • How to Complete a Search Warrant
  • Building Searches and Arrest Tactics
  • Low Risk and High Risk Traffic Stops1
  • Domestic Crisis Intervention
  • Emergency First Aid
  • Hostage Negotiation
  • White Collar Crime (ID Theft, Forgery, etc.)
  • Bomb Threat Response

  • Active Shooter Response
  • Traffic Accident Investigation
  • Investigating the Impaired Driver
  • Firearms: Handgun and Rifle

In addition to learning about these law enforcement topics, Explorers will be able to ride along with a police officer while they are on patrol. Explorers also help out at large community gatherings in the Willmar area. Finally, Explorers have the opportunity to compete against other Explorer Posts in their skills at the statewide convention that occurs every year.
